Virtual Course Format

The Canadian Orthopaedic Association Basic Science Course has transitioned permanently to a virtual format and has been divided into four modules spread over two years.

2025-2026 Course Dates:

  • Module 1 (Basic Science of Basic Science) – October 9, 2025
  • Module 2 (Non-Neoplastic Conditions) – April 16, 2026
  • Module 3 (Orthopaedic Biomechanics) – October (day to be determined) 2026 – Registration will open in Summer 2026
  • Module 4 (Neoplasia/Tumour) – April (day to be determined) 2027 – Registration will open in Summer 2026

Program and commitment details:

  1. Videos: The residents will be responsible for viewing the academic videos that will accompany the lectures and discussion groups. The access instructions for the videos will be sent to completed registrants.
  2. Day of: There will be a morning lecture for the cohort as a whole, followed by 5 additional lectures/discussions for smaller groups in breakout rooms.
  3. Each session will be 40 minutes in length: a brief high yield summary of key points from the instructor’s video (5-10 minutes); the remaining 30 minutes will be an interactive session of cases and/or multiple-choice questions.  Each session will be followed by a 5-minute buffer/break.
  4. Session format: To enhance the residents’ experience, as well as that of the faculty, we will divide the attendees into 6 breakout rooms/groups. The instructors will rotate virtually through the different breakout rooms during the session.
